I finally decided to post some images here to get some critique. This owl was one from a few dozen that invaded Orillia back in March/April

Actually I thought of cropping and manipulating a bit. Sure, give it a shot.

I see how that could work. What I think is hard for a person is to let go of what they know is reality, especially when an image represents a memory. I already did crop the image a bit to have the branches be a kind of frame.

great first post, welcome to NSN....

Aesthetics over reality!!? I've heard that before!! I am not a big fan of cloning out bif areas of branches etc, but would do if it makes a huge difference..

Sweet first and welcome. I prefer the original. Wish its eyes weren't shadowed.

Welcome to NSN! You have a nice shot for your initial contribution -- owl + moon in good lighting is a great piece of imagery to work with. I like the wind swept plumage on the owl; that plus the cool tones of the image very subtly communicate to me a colder-weather view, without snow or ice.

I'm also not a fan of large area cloning, but will do it at need. Ofer's repost is a strong composition, and emphasizes the vertical nicely. I am learning to think more vertically myself. Your own crop to frame the owl in a better balance with the branches on each side is on the path, and I don't mind your original post at all. Of course your positioning to get the moon level with the owl's head is a good piece of visualization prior to any PS work. :)

Thinking a bit, IMHO the thinner, more profuse branches on the right hand side are a little weaker as framing elements than the heavier, sparser ones on the left. The RHS branches' lighter coloring also doesn't complement the owl as well as do the branches on the LHS side. But these are nits; personally I don't really mind environment in the frame. Nature is what it is.

Hope to see more from you!

That is exactly the feel/mood I was hoping to get across with this image. You nailed the description I couldn't put into words.
