Mike and I were shooting at a spot where the birds were engaging in the butterfly behavior again and got a pretty nice sequence of a yellow legs fight. This one was in the middle of the sequence, when one bird was litterally standing on the other. You can't really controll the fight so you just push the trigger and hope for the best.

Please give me an honest critique of this. Does it work? I kind of like it because the attention is focused on the bird being pounded on, but it bothers me that the other bird's wing was cut off. What is your impression of this?

Camera Model: Canon EOS 20D, Lens: 500mm w/ TC1.4xII Exposure mode: Av, Shutter speed: 1/1600 sec, Aperture: 7.1, Exposure compensation: -2/3, Flash: External E-TTL High speed sync + Red eye reduction, Flash exposure compensation: -2, Metering mode: Evaluative, ISO: 400.

Frankly, when I first looked I did not notice the wing clip. Certainly an unusual image well exposed.

A cool shot, Christoph. Wish the upper bird had all of it's wings, but the huge bonus here is the partially submerged one!

IMO, the missing wingtips are not even an issue. The story told by the action and the look of the grounded bird overpower any nits easily.

Hi Christoph -

IMHO the action is great, however there are a couple of things that could make this better. The first and foremost is that I wish the upper bird was facing toward the camera instead of away. If it were facing toward you then the wing clip would not matter IMO. Since it is facing away then I would like to see more of the wings.

This is still a cool behavioral shot as is.

I think this works because you can see the whole bird on the bottom, even the eye peering over the muck. I laughed out loud when the image came up. In a perfect world it'd be nice to have 100% of both birds, but with interaction like this it's still really cool.

Can there be better than that, yes, like every photo taken. I thin a 2cm crop at the bottom works a little better.
But as is, the story is clear and visible to the viewer and the "humiliation" look on the mud eating guy is just hilarious.
Fantastic capture !

Like it as is, you can't be overly fussy with action shots, this works because it has caught some of the peak action.
