D70, nikkor 50mm, 1/400th, f/10, ISO200, NEF, hand held, on camera flash master-synched with remote nikon SB800 facing bird's flight path, below it... the sun helped do the rest

this is one of many Anna's humming bird shots i have taken over the past year...i was about 2 feet away as the hummers around here came in to feed on canna's growing around my pond....he was directly over the water, below me, and the sun being high enough to cast "sparkles" in the water of my pond and the polarizer kept their brightness within reason...the wings are not perfectly "frozen" in this shot; however, i feel the slight blur helped this shot to give it motion, as well as compliment the "dream" like feel of the shot...the trick with hummer shots is NOT shutter speed, as Greg can attest to....it's all about the light...where it hits, how strong it is, and what angles it fires from...thanks for viewing!

I like this shot a lot. Just wish the 'sparkles' weren't there.

While I love the shot as presented, I think I would like it much more without the circular highlights. As for the hummer and the way you used flash / exposure - Awesome.

Love this just how it is. Has an almost magical quality - the wing blur works well.

well it's not for everyone i know...i guess i should have mentioned that the sparkles were intentional....i wanted it to look as if the hummer was in space, or among "stars"...perhaps a star filter would have been better? :) most of my other hummer shots have the typical flora background, which i was trying to change up here.... thank you for your comments!

Missioned accomplished. This has a very nice dream-like feel to it.

Hey, I really didn't want you to feel that you failed. I think you did a great job, given your intentions. I'm (read: just me) just not a huge fan of natural subjects in un-natural settings. I would hate to feel responsible for you're stopping to try new things, and as mentioned - your flash work is outstanding.

Wow, the sparkles almost make the hummer look like glamorous star entering a stage!

I like the sparkles and the translucent wings, an interesting shot that works for me.
