The famous (infamous?) Isla Del Sol whimbrel that others on this forum have mentioned and photographed.

Would you crop this photo on the left side? I wanted to show his fat body but thought it might make a more effective photo with additonal cropping on left and perhaps a bit at the top. I'd appreciate your comments.

If possible a little more room on the bottom. The image looks soft on my monitor here at the lab (uncalibrated). Maybe a tad USM.

Nice one, Van. Your own cropping suggestions seem good to me.

Van,

Agree with Brandon's suggestions. It looks soft on my monitor as well. I like the shot. The bird is in some nice light and the open mouth with the detail shown is great.

Have seen this one on Isla Del Sol but only in the worst of light or most horrible of BG. Nice job getting him looking good.

Hope to see you out there as well sometime.

Very enjoyable! Great timing to catch this vocalization! :) Yes, I would crop it some more on the left but probably not on top. It does look a bit soft to me and there's a bit of haloing around the bill in particular. But it's a very pleasing composition.

Royce,
Thanks for your comments. I see that haloing in the downloaded photo but it doesn't appear on my screen in the original. I've had this happen once on another photo, a white bird against blue water. I'll have to take a closer look at the "save for web" images in the future.

Good one Van. I know this bird, too -- have a couple of okay images of it. Nothing so close or dramatic as this with the open bill! I agree with your own cropping advice, too.

Yes I agree with your suggestion to take some from the left. Its always a chore with head shots to know where to crop.

It looks to me like it could use a bit of sharpening

The open beak makes this different--and very nice.

The open mouth is great. I would crop the left.
