Another view of Jock, this time repairing his bower. These birds spend a lot of time repairing and decorating the bower to attract the ladies.
This species collects blue things along with onion skins and flowers. Blue packing tape and milk bottle tops are popular with Jock.

Wayne,

The light and color are better on this than the last...as presented. His blue ornaments are a riot!!

Cool shot!!

I agree with Bill....the colors and light are better here. This guy is one dandy and enterprising bird. Do they all choose blue or is this just his "chick magnet"? A very interesting behavioral shot.

A much better image than the last one. A really lovely bird. Everything is blue, even his eyes.

Hey Wayne and Lana,

This "chick Magnet" thing, dosn't work. I tried it. I put blue stuff all around my house and I havn't seen a girl within a mile of me. :D

I just love that color of blue in the bird. Wayne, the photo still has a lot of contrast to it. I might try some Fill flash if you get the chance to shoot it again. Great photo.

I saw these guys on the Life of Birds and was fascinated by this behaviour. I do still find this one to be quite contrasty with little detail in the blacks, but still an interesting behavioural shot.

 You got some crazy birds your side of the ditch. Nice behaviour shot. I'm guessing a bit of detail has been lost in the scan. It looks a tad contrasty to me. Could you get down a bit lower? If so, I think that might also be nice. Should this go in EOH? Don't want to be pedantic, just wondering where the line is.
Nice one Wayne, looking forward to more.
Cheers.

Thanks everyone.

Satin Bower birds collect blue, other species have different tastes.

Alan, any tips on flash would be appreciated. The current setup is two flashes in front slightly above the bird, one top light at the rear and one backlight at the rear right.

The two rear lights are on manual the two front set to auto (F11 in this case)
Sorry I forgot to mention the flash setup in the original post

I like this one better than the last few. I'd wish the twig wasn't in front of him but you can't have everything. :)

The description for the Birds Forum states:
For posting and critiquing images of birds. Images may include elements of humankind, such as the bird's perch, when it does not have a significant presence in the image.

Since the "Bower" ornaments are only a small part of the image the above statement allows their presence.

I guess I was wondering whether this constituted "significant presence" as it is an important part of the image. I'm quite happy to see it here of course as I don't visit EOH as often :)

That is a judgement call that is made by the moderators. Significant Presence refers to things like feeders, bird baths and large items like that. Since the bird adds these pieces to its nest they have become a part of the bird's natural habitat.
