This is another shot from the fish hatchery Saturday.....and a real grab shot. There were 2 Greater Yellowlegs there all day. Never once did they go into the drained ponds but rather stayed above in the grass above. They were usually down where I could only get their head. I could get close to them in my car but they would always take off to the other side of the pond if I just opened the car door. As I was driving around one of them came up enough for this shot. I got a couple of shots off with the camera on a towel hanging out the car window before they took off. It's no easy feat getting my camera with the flash/BB out the window of a sports car. I probably should have cropped it to more of a vertical from the horizontal and done a few other things better but I really liked the pose and found it so unusual that they stayed in the grass all day.

Canon 1D, 500mmL IS, 2XTC, 550EX, BB
ISO 320, ss 1/500, f/13, EV -1/3, flash -2
Photoshop - cropped from a horizontal, USM, levels, etc.

A nice shot, Lana!
Love the pose and the feather details. Oh, I know what you mean ... I hate putting the BB on when I'm in a hurry too!

Nothing with a 500mm and a 2x can be considered a grab shot :D

It's a real nice shot though that clearly illustrates the longer bill of the Greater Yellowlegs.

Lana, It's tough when they don't cooperate. Wish the BG were more OOF. In similar situations I have turned my car in the opposite direction so they can't see me when I open my doors and assembled my tripod and long lens and then slowly crept about to the front of the car and shot almost from ground level. Still a good looking Greater Yelowlegs.

Lana,

I like this look at the GYl out of the water. I like the view of the long legs of these birds. The pose and composition are wonderful. The BG is nice but I'm wondering what f11 or even f9 would have produced.

This is a great shot and one I would love to have in my files. :)

Nice bird, nice pose and great exposure, nothing to nit pick about really, but in this case an f/8 or less would have rendered a sharp bird and a wonderful BG with decent bokeh !, You are killing me with these bird shots Margolo!!!!

In more cases that I want to remember, I have been caught with too little DOF, especially with the 500mmL IS and 2X TC. As a result I have a habit of not going below f/13. This is one of the many things that I need to work on to see what the differences are, when to use what, and what the limits are. Guess I'll put a stuffed bird out back for practice. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Lana,
A very nice image. Rare to see one of these away from water. I like the detail you've caught and althoug the BG could be more blurred this still works very well.

I don't know that I've ever seen a Yellowlegs out of water. I like the way this shot shows off those long yellow legs! Your fish hatchery looks like a fantastic place for bird photography!

Very nice image, Lana. What's with Yellowlegs in grass and Killdeer in water?
