Wild Hog - Near Aransas NWR, Texas

I was set up in a pop-up blind near a deer feeder on a private ranch that a family of Whooping Cranes were recently frequenting. I got my shots of Whooping Cranes, which would have been enough, but then a family of wild hogs came rambling in for the free buffet. This is the matriarch of the group. She brought in about 11 piglets and 2 adolescent boars. Apparently, she felt I should have set up somewhere else. She would advance and withdraw. A couple of tense moments, since there was no place for me to go if she got ticked. Full frame with top cropped to get 4x5.

Mode: Manual with incident meter for 1/320 sec @ f/8

Thats awesome... Great story, glad you got the whoopers too. The detail here is just wonderful, just the right size in the frame for me and great background.. Thanks for coming by wilds.. with a terrific contribution.

Reminds me of a javelina with lifts. Great shot of this bad girl. They are very alert and not easy to approach for a clean shot. These wild hogs and their feral cousins are the bane of the farmers existence in much of East, South, and West Texas' farm lands. They do a lot of damage when they hit the pasture for the buffet.

Busy momma with 11 piglets! Very nice and great detail. It's always great when the unexpected happens.

Hey Wayne,

Well put together image .. the size in the frame works well.

What's the difference between a wild hog and a feral pig? I thought all hogs/pigs here were feral, as they're not native, other than the javelina. Are there some kind of released wild hog from somewhere else?

Thanks.

Cheers

Carl

Carl,
To answer your question, there is no difference. All of these hogs, and there are millions of them in Texas, are offspring of released domestic hogs. The only exception, other than the javelina, are Russian boars. Some of these were introduced in Texas many years ago and many have crossed bred with feral hogs. This animal is definately not a Russian boar.

Hey Bill,

Thanks -- that's what I was thinking. I grew up in Australia, and we have exactly the same situation there with wild pigs, though we don't have the Russian boar.

Cheers

At the end of Deer Season, I saw about 15 Javelinas on my Ranch here in San Manuel Tx. And yes they will screw up your property.

When I'm out shooting and walking around a big handgun is a MUST!!!! You are very lucky she didnt go rip your popup blind to shreds and put her 2" tusk in you. I always carry either my 9mm with HP's or my my .357 Magnum with HP's. in case I have to blast these guys.

Wayne,
A fine shot that conveys very well what you describe in your narrative. Thanks for sharing both.
