Heermann's Gull, La Jolla, California

Taken in San Diego last year around this time. I usually go for an alert posture but all the screaming and waving of arms refused to get this guys attention, even though he was sitting right in front of me. ;) Sleepy boy.

In this stage of plumage these birds have a very "jewelish" looking eye, which is evident in the full size but probably difficult to see here. Features such as this is one of the reasons I enjoy close-ups so much.

Comments and brutal critiques welcomed.

Lovely portrait Greg. Great detail.

Looks like it could do with a little lightening as it appears a tad dark on my monitor...

Beautiful shot of the king of the gulls Greg! It could go a bit brighter.

Beautiful shot! I love the amount of detail that you can see in a closeup like this.

Amazing detail in this one Greg, and the red in that bill! I wish we got them up here in as pretty a plumage! Usually their heads have turned all gray by the time they make it here in June/July.

One of my favorite birds and you have provided me with one of my favorite photos of it.
Beautiful and subtle detail, wonderful eye detail and color and the overall gray tone really sets off the red on the bill and area around the eye.
