When I took this shot it was the open bill that interested me. After having looked at how busy the background was I just kept it as a record shot. Now, after having cloned out an even MORE distracting branch that looked as if it were precisely between upper and lower beak, I decided to go ahead and have some fun posting it as an entry in the "motive" for the week. I apologize for the shortcomings of this shot, but don't hesitate to criticize any and all elements that you can think of.

Canon 10D, Canon 100-400 (at 400mm), tripod and cable release.
SS: 1/400, Aperture: f/8.0, ISO: 200

A great shot of this BCNH in its habitat and it fits the motif theme well ...

Very nice motif shot. BG is busy but it does not bother me in this shot - it looks like this heron enjoys his habitat :)

Nice one Michael. Could use more USM. The branches really don't bother me that much except for the bright one in the far bg that is going right through its belly. The expression is great.

The bird almost seems to have an "expression" to me. The open bill really is neat. Could only wish for a cleaner surrounding environment.

Agree with Mike about the branch through the belly. Love the expression!

I am with Mike Wilson--the big white stick needs to go or be lessened somehow.
