Northern Harrier Circus cyaneus
Bosque del Apache Dec. 04

While shooting at the farm fields one afternoon, a friend I was shooting with yelled to me,"Harrier!" I looked over to see this female gliding along below me in the ditch between the road and the corn fields. When it reached my position since I was standing close to the edge of the ditch, it looked up and saw me and shot straight up out of the ditch and rolled over to fly south over the road. I got three images and this is the only one in focus, the last one. The bird was in the upper right hand corner of the image but the wings were all there so I added some canvas and painted in some blue sky. I just happen to have my flight shooting lens in my hand, set to manual mode at sunny f/16 and -1/3 for Snow Geese. I was very lucky. This is the only image I have of a Harrier in flight and it all happened in about 10 seconds.

These guys are darn hard to get! I think I see a little halo around the bird. Great rich blue sky, too!

Nice one Mike! :D I'm still waiting for a flying Harrier shot at less than 500 yards. :(

You really need the reflexes of a gunslinger when you get your chance. Nicely done.

Their is a bit of a sharpening halo, and spots where the background layer selection wasn't complete (under the hook of the bill and a spot just in front of the far wing.)

A gem.

Nice capture. Looks just a little soft on the face, but I know how difficult this was to get.

Very cool shot. A little selective sharpening would improve it even more.

Very, very nice, Mike! I agree with Bill that these are pretty difficult to get. The bird's position is terrific and I love the rich colors here. :)

On my rotten work monitor this does look like it could use a smidge of selective USM.

Mike,

Excellent shot. I like the wing position and the blue sky really makes a great background. Well done.

Nice shot, Mike. Although I've seen a few up close, most of my shots are from far, far away. Good job being ready.

With raptors in flight everything happens too fast for me, drives me nuts, nice catch!

That dark sky is fabulous. Lovely shot and very nice angle to the head.
