Bonaparte’s Gull, California

I found this bird about a year ago at Bolsa Chica in Orange County, CA. This non-breeding adult was photographed from the bridge by lying down with the lens resting on the base of the walking surface in order to get as low as possible. There was no wind and the sun was bright but diffused slightly through some dark storm clouds, making for dramatic lighting.

A friend of mine preaches “always point your shadow at the bird”, but for mostly white birds (particularly with white breasts) I almost always prefer to stay away from direct frontal lighting. Instead, I prefer the sun coming slightly from the rear and side in order to cast a shadow on the breast. This brings some depth and shadow detail to what would be an otherwise flat looking image.

Comments and brutal critiques welcomed.

So that was you picking up splinters on the walking bridge! I like it... and your lighting preference shows off well here Greg. 8) :)

Greg, this is a work of art. The direction of light really does change with each subject and situation. The detail in this image is incredible.

Greg,

This is very nice. The side lighting has really brought out the feather detail.

Thanks,

Angle of light here is great. There's nothing wrong with having your shadow facing elsewhere. :D
