Hello NatureScapers:

The Minneapolis area has two zoos. The Minnesota Zoological Garden is very photographer friendly with many natural type enclosures providing suitable backgrounds for image making. The Como Park Zoo is a much smaller zoo in Como Park, St Paul. It is a free zoo and has less $ to make changes in enclosures. As time goes by, more and more enclosures are becoming "natural" and not just concrete, chain link and fake rocks.

So last Friday I finished work a little early and was able to get to the Como Park Zoo by 4:00; they lock up at 6:00 (as the light is getting good). I walked around looking for things to try to photograph for this forum.

The two lions were sitting right next to each other, leaning together. The conditions included shooting down around chain link fence, at a height of about 30 ft above the animals, chain link behind them, some not so natural MN oak trees, and a fake rock with a pond in front. The light was scattered with heavy shadows in the background and spotty light on the animals. The only neat thing was that the two were sitting together giving a male female comparison. Even though the animals are a given at zoos, the image making can be very difficult.

Although I probably should have walked away, I stubbornly looked at different angles, and places I could be on this narrow board walk to try to get a shot. Standing on my toes, this is what I came up with. I have been thinking about several recent topics in the phototopics area, like why do we constrain ourselves to certain crop sizes, and of course the famous call to creativity.

So what do you think...? Delete or keep? :D You wont hurt my feelings if you think it stinks, I am not really sure about it myself.. :?

Thanks for looking and any comments.

Dennis,
This is great. I like the shadow, makes it very dramatic. Nice work.

Not only do I love the light/shadows, I like how one cat is facing us, one is a profile. Hope you decide to keep it. :)

Dennis,
I am impressed. I suspect 99% of us would have walked on and you come up with one very special image. I wish my brain worked this way.

Very nice, Dennis. I do like the side-by-side comparison of female and male. The crop is excellent, too.

One of those "knock out" shots that is very appealing. Great eye!
Love the extreme crop/pano look you have with this one Dennis.
I was looking at the male, and depending on the size of the file, was wondering what he would look like by himself and cropped right behind his ear?

I am always looking for different/extreme crops, and really would like to see more from you and others. Helps to see things differently sometimes!

Take care buddy!

Now THIS I like!! The mood created by the shadow and the tight crop is super!! The intense eye remind me of a similar Frans Lanting imge that's also superb.

Hey Dennis,

Superb image. I love these kinds of shots, and I think the trend in nature photography is to not look for them .. we live in days of frontlit hell. :D

Again, I'm not a big captive animal guy, but this shot is all about what I love in art, of any form .. mood.

Cheers

Carl

Dennis,

That light is unreal and really makes this worth the effort.

Dennis, I concur with the others - don't even think about deleting this one. The dark shadows really make the pair look moody and almost sinister.

Are you kidding??? You seriously considered deleting this one? Wow, I can't imagine what the others must look like. I loved this even before I read your story, it's a stunning image and your panoramic composition puts it over the top in my book.

In exchange for this excellent advice, you now owe me a LARGE print of this image to go over my sofa... ;)
