Another Upland Sandpiper from Carden Plains, taken last Saturday. This bird was encountered quite a distance before Carden; there was a pair. As this one perched on the post the other would swoop and steal the perch, their wing beats are quite fast very similar to the Spotted Sandpiper despite their huge size. This one was calling beautifully, as you can see the throat full of air; their call is very attractive and sounds quite wonderful and subdued. I saw them on this post as I was speeding to Carden, a 2 hour drive from home, hoping to get there as early as possible.

I took a few shots with the 100-400 and then drove up a bit to get my other camera and 500mm +1.4x assembled. I then reversed back and got a few more shots. This shot with the 100-400 is cropped about 40% with no additional adjustments other than USM 75 after downsizing.

I find the 1DM2 significantly softer than the 10D after comparing images.

A very fine image, Lat!
Love the stretch pose and bg. The only nit for me is the missing toes ... but that's just me.

Could I also see your Mk II shot of the same bird please for comparison? I don't find the Mk II images significantly softer than 10D in my short experience with it ...

KK, the difference would not be noticeable on the images posted, as they are downsized and sharpened for posting; one would have to compare the unedited images. In the last 2 weeks of using the 1DM2 I have used more USM than on the 10D. This image was not the one I was going to post, until I noticed the calling motion of the bird. My first choice was sharpened at USM 150 to produce a similar result.

I was interested to read your comment re the softer MKII images. One of our highly respected UK Professional Wildlife photographers said pretty much the same thing in his review which I read earlier this week......??

I like this a lot - the toes not being there doesn't bother me as they aren't cut-off by the frame, just obscured by the stump.

I agree with EJ, didn't notice the toes until they were mentioned. Beautiful wingspread. Great shot.

Excellent. Great detail and nice oof bg.
The dark band at the top is slightly distracting, and I might have been tempted to fix it in ps, but it is only a minor thing.

Lat, Wonderfully detailed capture!!! Adore the underwing and throat full of air!!! While I don't miss the feet, perhaps a tad of a bottom crop before printing. Very fine shot!!! :D 8)

Nice Sandpiper Lat, I don't think I have any with the bulging throat, good timing and nice BG for this bird.

This is a wonderful shot.....and with the inflated throat, it's extra special. Nice job with the post processing as well.

I have found the shots on the 1D2 to be soft as well. Considerably softer than the 1D and perhaps a little softer than the 10D. For the first time, I've set the in camera sharpening to a 3. Before I was deleting images left and right until I started post processing to determine what was acceptable. With the in camera setting it is much easier to tell what's a good shot.
