I stumbled upon this phainopepla with the camera set for a totally different lighting situation. The result was an image overexposed by about 1 1/2 stops. There still seemed to be a lot of detail in the black bird so I decided to try to salvage the image. The only thing I'm not sure about is the sky. It was totally blown in the original and I could only recover a little color. Does it look very unnatural?

Neil,

I think the bird looks great. The sky has a funky color to it. Kind of like when I use a warming filter on a hazy day.

Prior to reading your comments, I was going to ask you what the BG was, as it looks greenish on my monitor. The bird is great on the perch and the head turn is excellent. :D :D

Cool bird, great detail. I guess the BG doesn't have to be sky...

The BG looks a little pastel to me but a very nice photo.

Pretty good job of salvaging this one, Neil. The sky color works well with the black bird. The highlites on the bird aren't blown from the overexposure like they could have been. Very nice. :)

One can tell it is out of bounds exposure wise, but the bird is nice and with good detail, nice perch and pose!! Congrats!! 8)

I think you've done an excellent job on this one Neil. Its beautiful. Yes, the sky is not quite as one normally expects sky to look, but the overall effect is very appealing and you have excellent detail and lovely pose in the bird. I really like his one! 8) 8) 8)

A fine image, Neil. Better to overexpose black than to overexpose white.
