Mount Hood at Lost Lake - Oregon, USA
EOS 1Ds, 24-70mm @ 35mm, Exp1 = 1/3 @ f/22, Exp2 = 2.5 @ F/22, GND 0.6, ISO 100

Last week I got up very early to find my way to one of the best Mount Hood viewpoints at Lost Lake to the north of the mountain. Finding this place in the dark was not easy but after a few wrong turns I did get there in time. The contrast tange was way beyond my 1Ds sensor could handle even with a Graduated Neutral Density filter so I combined the GND technique with the multiple exposure technique.

E.J.---I think this is stunning and would like to learn the technique you describe. I can almost see a bird in this photo. :D

Nicely done EJ. The technique looks great.

Juli, the technique EJ is talking about is all about expanding the dynamic range of your sensor by taking several images at different exposures. It's kind of like bracketing then merging them together in Photoshop. In many respects its much better than simply using a ND Grad. I'm thinking it can be an article in the future. Look at my image of the branch on Rosamond Dry lake. I used seven images on that picture.

Cheers

Very nicely done. Love the colors creeping up around the mountain. (I keep looking for ducks though. :) ) I might like the sky just a tiny bit lighter - or the water a tiny bit darker - but I would take it as it stands in a heartbeat.

Magnificent EJ. I have missed your landscapes and this is quite a shot in the chin. Colors are unreal.

Thanks for this EJ 8) This is beautiful.

of all the things I miss up here is the mountains that we grew up with. Every once in a while as a cheer up I look at your landscape images of Banff Jasper and the Koontneys just for a taste of home.

I like this even better than the cover. Could you give some tech details about how you accomplished this?

Thanks.

Thanks Dan, it was in the running for the cover but Heather REALLY liked the one that we ended up choosing!

Besides the details that are in the post above, there was a little chop so I opted for a long exposure to smooth out the water. The exposure difference between the subject and sky was really huge. I tried GND's but that was hopeless due to wanting to keep the trees a consistent color so I finally opted for a soft 2 stop GND and then took two exposures, one for the grey part of the pountain and the other for the sky. A little bit of dodging brought out some more tecture in the trees in a seperate layer and then I brought them all together.

E.J., I'm glad I didn't have the job of choosing the cover, because it would have been a really tough choice. It's one of the best I've seen of Mt. Hood. I hope you have a HUGE print of it on your wall!

One of the best landscapes I've seen of yours.
Whatever you did to make this image, it turned out wonderfully

EJ, this is my favorite shot of yours all time.

The simplicity and bold colors are amazing. Just a superb, world-class shot.

This is quite beautiful and shows excellent use of different techniques to achieve your goal. While this is beautiful it is also subtle whereas the cover shot is in-your-face stunning. I think they are both terrific.
