Lots of ducks around Prospect Lake in Denver. First time I've been there and it was really fun being able to get so close to some of these ducks. However the mergansers stayed pretty far away. I shot this with stacked converters and I still think it looks pretty good.

Canon 1D, 500 f4IS, 1.4 and 2.0 x, ISO 200, evaluative -1/3, 1/640, F10

Nice shot, Rob! He looks like he's welcoming you with open arms (wings  ). The water is really neat, too and the image is quite sharp considering stacked conversters. Well done!

Rob,

This is most likely a Common Merganser. A Red-breasted would be quite a ways out of its range at Prospect.

This is a very nice shot showing the wing flap behavior. :)

I think that you are right it is great...tons of attitude. Does it need to be tilted just a tad? Looks a bit downhill, but not a big deal at all...

Cheers,

I love the action, perhaps a little blue cast on my monitor.

Nice shot Rob. I like how you can pick out the water droplets on the belly.
As for ID, I put a vote in for a female Hooded Merganser. There is a lot of crest there. The white throat patch is present on female Hoodeds and Common Mergs have bright red bills.

Once again, nice action shot.

Rob, I would not have guessed stacked converters. This is great.

Nice catch of the action. Not sure about the species but there were quite a few Red-breasted Mergansers at Prospect Park last February when I was shooting there. They were way outnumbered by the amount of Common Mergansers there.

Actually, I made a mistake, this is a female Hooded Merganser, I have a few other pics of this bird hanging out with a male, unless she has a different species boyfriend.

Nice shot, Rob, especially considering it was taken with stacked TCs. It's very sharp.
It looks a bit blue on my monitor also.

Good work!

You're right! DUH! The black bill should have been the clue. I guess I need to pay more attention.
