I am not certain if I have posted this image on NSN or not. Sorry if this is a duplicate post
While attending a Shoot the Light workshop in FL with Chas we were challenged to shoot some flight photos of these least terns. Can you imagine hand holding a 500mm f/4 IS lens with a 550EX flash with a Better Beamer attached...
After 20 minutes of this I thought that I was going to require traction for my shoulder. It was very overcast this afternoon and we were shooting toward what ever light there was. So, we had to use the flash as the main light on the birds.
If memory serves me this was set for -1Ev ambient and the flash at -2/3 Ev, ISO 200, f/4 or 5.6 not certain what the shutter speed ended up being but it was pretty fast.
This is about 50% of the original frame. In PS levels and USM.
Comments welcome,

I like the bird placement, exposure, and action capture. Can't complain about the whitish background as I often get struck with such.

Wil, this is not a duplicate post, and if it was, there's no need to apologze as many new people will not have seen it.

I love this clean shot. The pose and position are great. I would imagine in a larger version there's a catchlight which would complete this great photo.

Thanks Alan. Yes, there is a catch light. Even though this is ~50% of the frame I printed this at 13"X19" for my brother - the print was incredible. I was amazed at how well it held up to the enlargement.

Wil,

This is very nice. I love the looking down pose. I'll bet the full size print really sings. :D

Fantastic action shot. I like the downward look causing a graceful curve towards the rump and tail feathers.
