(Great Blue Heron) Bosque de Apache, New Mexico

This is intended to be about a month long series of images from my two weeks at Bosque. My intent is to make the images flow as though they all occurred during a single day. Of course, they occurred during the two weeks I was there. :)

This is the eighteenth post of the series. The time is now 7:43am.

There was a long line of long white lenses shooting cranes this morning from the crane pool when this GBH decided to buzz the line. The reaction was in the line was immediate.

"Wow! That was close! Did you get that?"

"Nope. Too close. It didn't focus fast enough!"

"Me neither. Wow, that would have been great."

And so on. From down the end of the line, one of the few black lenses and a very new D2H, had the photographer standing behind it with a big smile on his face. Yea, it was close. Made closer by the fact that he had a 1.4x on the 600. But the focusing had been dead on and the camera quick. Then came the reply, "Yea. I got three. See!!!!!"

I just happen to like tight shots. :D This was the first of the three images. I do admit there were a few others that cut off the beak but three is still good. It was a close flyby.

Tripod/Wimberly mounted Nikon D2H, 600mm AFS, TC-14EII, ISO 200, Aperture Priority, 1/1250 @ F5.6, SB-80DX, BB, FP. Full Frame.

Good catch, Anthony, you must have reflexes like a cat's. You'd be good at shooting skeet!

Still showing off and rubbing it in. :D

Another superb image, Tony. No nits on the close crop either.

I like this shot, I have found these birds very hard to get a good photo of.

Well done Tony. I might crop this one even tighter since the wingtips are gone. Like it as is though.

Great Shot, especially considering the quick timing!

This one is nice...and unique. I like the tight shots. I just don't think about seeing a GBH when I think of Bosque.

7:43 a.m. ? At this rate this series will take much longer than a month! ;) It's a great series and shot. It looks like you had a very productive trip.
