This is an unorthadox comp that I think works rather well. I wish I could have squeeked out a bit more DOF, but the shutter speed was low , and the camera already at its ISO 400 limit.

1D, 500 w/ 2x
exposure-incident verified via histogram

Best,

You always seem to manage to shoot a bird in an unusual angle. Now the angle seems normal, but the bird's in an unsual angle... I keep trying though...

Lovely personal shot. Love the both eyes staring to me

Cheers

I was never a fan of head and partial bird shots but shots like this and others I've seen lately have been bringing me around :D . The craned neck, the background and most of all those eyes really make this one unique! Nice shot Chas.

I really like the bend in the neck--I agree more DOF would have been nice

Wonderful, Chas. My wife had an aunt who looked exactly like this. Exactly where did you focus to get the maximal DOF?

Chas, Great composition. Those eyes are captivating. This must be from our down the slope foray.

I like it, the soft hues and the diagonal lines created by the neck. I would love to see one of these birds in person someday.

Sandy, I shot this at f/11, one stop down from wide open, as I always try do when using converters. Depressing the DOF preveiw button while focusing will allow you to see the actual zone of focus for any given aperture, other than wide open. You need only shift the zone as you wish, let go of the DOF button and take the image.

Best,

Chas

Very cool - I really like the curve of the neck that leads you from the bottom up to the eyes.

I love it. Chas, you never cease to amaze me. This is a terrific portrait, the curve of the neck, both eyes visible and a wonderfully placed DOF.
I don't know if it is my monitor but it looks as if it could use a slight tweak in selective colors/black to make it pop.

Chas,
Certainly a different composition and it almost "suggests" movement. At least to me.
No crop suggestions, sorry

Hey Will, yeah, it could use a bit of tweaking. but ... :D you guys get the idea. BTW, where did you learn that selective colors/black to make it pop technique  . Actually, a bit of an S cuve in curves makes it pop.

Chas

Chas,

All of it comes together, the color, the neck, BG and makes a different but well done view of a pretty bird.

I was wondering about the composition as this opened up - silly me - but the twist of the neck made it perfectly clear! The eyes forward with a bit of asymmetry is great.

I kinda like the composition. 8) Here's looking at you too.
So, you're telling me that the difference between ISO 400 and ISO 500 on the 1D is that noticeable? :?

IMO, ISO 400 with the 1D is not all that good (I am being nice), and it is worse from there. Catch my drift :D .
