Motif: Ferruginous Hawk

Obviously, the name of this bird comes from the ferruginous color (reddish brown) on the wings and tail. This is a typical habitat shot during the winter on the plains. The telephone pole has provided these birds with a great vantage point over prairie dog towns. Usually, where there are prairie dogs, there are ferruginous hawks.

Absolutely beautiful shot!! I really like the pose. Maybe a small crop off the right will improve the balance of the composition.

Boy I feel stupid :oops:, had no idea ferruginous was a reddish brown color. Had to pull out the dictionary for that one, makes sense now.

Oh, and this is an outstanding shot. The alert over-the-shoulder look is great and that is some sweet light!
