Hooded Merganser - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
EOS 10D, 600mm, 2x, 1/500, f/10, ISO 200

Hooded Mergansers are not terribly common Arizona but I decided last Sunday to take a look at a spot that had reports last winter of these gorgeous creatures and sure enough there were a few there. They are terribly skittish and it took hours before I could anything that was bigger than a small dot but I did manage to get this and a couple of others.

Amazing shot EJ. I might crop a bit off the bottom. Love the head turn and the eye.

These are incredible-looking birds. I have never met one that wasn't camera shy. I like that the hood is up and I like the color of the water in this shot. I would say this is well worth your investment of time. :D

The crop does seem to strengthen the image. This is really great and well worth the time spent waiting.

Great job with this one, EJ. I know all about sitting for hours for a shot as well. I like the repost. The colors and detail are excellent....and the look on his face is terrific.

EJ,

This is an excellent shot. Love the pose and the shape of the head in this image. The color of the water is also beautiful.

Great image. I prefer the original--if I were going to crop the bottom, I'd want to crop the left to stay closer to 1 x 1.5 (perhaps 1 x 1.618! ).

Gorgeous colors, EJ. I prefer your original post - the duck has more room.

P.S. Forgot to mention the lovely, Velvia-like colors, which all Velvia critics seem to adopt after they go digital! :) (Can't think of anyone less saturated in digital than they were in film, despite digital's supposedly more neutral, accurate rendition. In my book, that's a good thing.)
