This Jay was coming in to land on an apple tree when all of a sudden all the other jays in the area scattered, screaming at the tops of their lungs. I didn't see it, but the appearance of the resident Sharpie probably put the fear of God into the jays and this guy immediately put on the brakes and took off with the others!

Wow, fantastic catch of this moment! It wouldn't be as effective a photo if the bird's head wasn't turned towards the camera, really neat! Super background for it, too.

This adds to an already great collection of songbirds in flight! Nice shot.

Another great image. With Photoshop, you could add some Sharpie feet in the upper right corner. What's the flash sync speed of the 10D, and are you getting anything extra from your beamer compared to the commerical models?

Clif, you've hit on his secret .. a custom-made Beamer with paintings of various songbirds stuck on the fresnel! :D :D

Hi Cliff,
Thanks for the question. The usual flash sync speed of the 10d is 1/200 but I do all my shooting of flight shots with the flash on FP (high speed sync) No, I don't really think my beamer is any better than a commercial model (just some cut-out cardboard- a better plastic will be made soon) with a $2 - and that's $2 Canadian  -fresnel lens from a pharmacy (one of those fresnel lens for people with poor sight to read with). I'm using an older 380ex which is not exactly a mini-sun so the trick is to use shorter focal lengths and get close.

Scott, again one of your superb flight images,

I just bought a beamer (80 CAD including shipping, taxes, etc.!!!). I was suprised and dissapointed how cheap it looks. If I knew I would construct one by myself too. You should start to sell your model for us in Canada :)

Man Scott, way to go. Another great flight shot. You sure have this down. I can see the fear in birds facial expression.

I bow down to this shot! I was trying to get some in flight of small birds, and was fairly disappointed. When I see your shot, I just want to head right back out again! Sadly.. it's now dark and I have the office calling me tomorrow :(

Regarding your home-made beamer, I'm with Fero, I think i might try making my own, it's ridiculous the price we need to be for S&H to Canada for such a light device.

Thanks for the image !
