Spotted Dikkop (female), Burhinus capensis, Zandvlei (near Cape Town), South Africa, October 2002, Eos 3 + 400/5.6L (perhaps 1.4x converter) + Gitzo 326, Sensia 100, Full Frame, slight USM.

Hi There,

here is the female spotted dikkop I promissed. I hope you like it. It was taken a bit closer than the male. (perhaps I even added a ring to the set up???) I guess the female is younger than the male. It doesn't show in the guide books that the males and females differ this much. The female has also less detail in the eye. (You should see the eye in 1:1)

Question. Does this framing, I mean a partial bird like here, work for you, or would you rather see the whole bird?

Peter

Got to love the eye. The framing is fine but I find myself being drawn toward the bright patch at the top right corner ... Someting you can clone it out.
A nice portrait overall, Peter! :)

The partial bird works for me. what really draws me in is the eye. I like the shot.

Peter, I really like this image. The eye-ring as well as the eyeball is perfect. I agree with some creative cloning in the URC.

Technically perfect and the composition for an image such as this is exactly what I would do. The "tree limb" in the URHC is a little distracting.

Nice image of the bird. I agree with the others on the URC. Personally, I am not a fan of this kind of framing and in this case since it's lighter than the image it draws your eye away from and out of the photo. Just one opinion, others may disagree.

I like the closeup crop. Sharp and full of detail, I would give this one one more small dose of USM. Interesting bird I've never heard of until you posted the last one.

Thanks again guys.

The distracting tree in the back was def. my mistake. Didn't see it. (How could I, I was caught by the eye...) Then again, if I'd repositioned I wouldn't be in the same plane as the head. Anyway, I'm not a cloner (other than dust) so I'll leave it.

I'm not an USM guru either. I'm happy it works a bit. Got some standard settings. Twice is too much. Maybe I should put some more efford in refining the settings. Usually I don't scan slides that are not tack sharp. Sharp scans only need a bit usm. But I agree the slide is still sharper than this.

I think I'm finished posting Dikkops. If you want to see a similar image as this one, but then the male look here:

Works for me. Yes, I would darken the URC in Curves to reduce the distraction. Love the eye detail and the subtle colors in the feathers.

I don't have anything new to add to the crits so I'll just say thanks for the glimpse at this beautiful bird. The eye really draws me in here and I love the detail in the feathers.
