I was outside my mom's house talking on the phone when this guy flew into the live oak tree I was standing by! After flying away once, he finally worked his way down to a reasonable height to photograph and then worked to a place to get a reasonable background. He was a wonderful, unexpected gift to watch.

Many thanks to Fabiola on some masterful PS work to help with this image!!! :D 8)

Nice shot Paul! Nice pose of this pretty bird. It is a bit noisy and there is a loss of details due to big crop.

I quite like the unusual horizontal pose of this one, Paul!
Some noise is visible as well as clone marks at top and right edges of frame ...

Not an easy bird to get close to. The noise in the dark areas is distracting. I too want to make this a verticle.

I get to see these woodpeckers so rarely, that for me any image would be worth spending time on. The horizontal perch does look a bit strange but I'm sure he doesn't care :)

Thanks for the comments! What can I say, he liked the food in the horizontal branch. :D I guess I'll post another a little more vertical. 8)
