This was taken near Wind Cave NP while attending a STL workshop.

Canon 1Dmk2 500mm f4 2x, Tripod, Manual exposure Sunny 16 1/1000 @ f5.6 Iso 400, Auto focus.

I find the bright vegetation occupying a large portion of the frame rather distracting ...
Perhaps a horizontal would work better, Jimmy!

I think the BG is distracting partly because it's so contrasty - perhaps toning that down a bit. Cropping to horizontal would accomplish the same thing, perhaps a little of both.

I would have tro agree with the above comments. Almost all the interesting elements are in the lower half of the image.
