Canon 1Ds Mark II 100-400 IS L Lens at f22 1/250 ISO 50 Multiflash technique.

Ideally in Hummingbird photography we should be shooting on the shade or early or late in the day, so the multiflash technique does not have to fight so hard to overcome the ambient light, however since frequently we have to travel long distances to find the hummers, we need to use all possible hours of the day without other recourse that shooting on full sun. On those cases we have to allow some ambient light to create ghost images as long the shutter is open. At time it can became creative giving a feeling of movement to an otherwise static image.

Thanks for looking, all brutal comments are welcome.

I know you were trying to overcome the ambient light, but to me this looks overflashed. Still better than any of my hummer images..

I like the diagonal bird in the square frame, and the splash of red color. Very pretty.

Another nice shot. The Bg and red look a bit over saturated to me Juan.

I can't come up with any reasonable critique for this as I'm totally in awe. The clarity is amazing, and I like the ghosting of the wings.

Brilliant as always.

I like this one - for some reason I really like the detail in the feet. I also like the motion blur of the wings.

I'm sorry to say Juan that I have missed some of your hummer shots along the way. Surely more great photography but also the details of the set up. Looks like you were trying to kill as much ambient lighting as possible by selecting ISO 50. Would you have selected ISO 25 if possible? (maybe it is with MK2?) If so, maybe you could use a polarizing or ND filter instead.

Have you thought of hanging a bed sheet or similar to use as a giant diffuser?

Thanks Juan and Nice Work!

Brian:

The idea of the giant white sheet as diffuser is a good one, but I think the polarizer or the graduated filter will not work since it will affecting both sources of light so it not might be very effective. Thanks for your commets.

I like the sense of motion on the wings. Is that brutal enough.
