Eastern Marsh Wren at Nest
Canon EOS 1DMKII, 500F4IS Handheld from Kayak
ISO 250 F6.3 @ 1/400sec. Full Frame on the height.
Not the best techs, but a nice record shot.

I have been fortunate enought to find several nests, but never an active one. Sat for 6 hours and was blessed by a Great Blue Heron Crap - FULL FACE  . Moments later........
They say it is lucky to be pooped-on by a bird

Be Brutal
PS....I know, it's not the cleanest BG or a full-frame birdie

Nice habitat. I would wish for a bit different lighting. There is a sheen on the leaves that might have been avoided by using a polarizing filter. Since you did not, I'd be tempted to selectively grab 2 or 3 of these leaves and town down a bit. I would also selectively grab the bird only and raise the contrast a bit more.

In the posted size, you can appreciate and see the bird. The bird would get lost if the image were smaller for publication purposes, perhaps.

So, I'm not the only one who risks bringing my 500mm in a kayak or canoe, and handholding it at that?

A wonderful and interesting habitat shot, Chris. A big nest for a little bird.

Chris, you cracked me up with the Heron bit :D

Excellent shot in my book. Love the comp and that the bird has bugs. Good job getting the bird in enough open space.

Chris,
Very interesting habitat shot, and I agree with toneing down the leaves.

Yes, it's good luck to be pooped-on ,when the Phoebe's over my garage door fledged the last one out pooped on me and I bought a lottery ticket and won $7.

Thank you for your kind words, Jeff :D
Since I got there and found the nest well before sun-up, I imagined the glorious golden morning light we all love. It didn't start to visit the nest until well after that - I just couldn't leave without a shot. I'm happy to have any nest / bird shot, as they usually are simply by chance for me. As for the PS work...I might work on it some more, but would rather try again in that golden light. Regarding the bird being lost - I wanted an image that showed the whole nest with the bird :D  It's a BIG nest and a small bird :D
Best,
Chris

The nest is going to overpower the bird due to the sheer size of the nest. I'll take the image for what it is: A small bird coming home to a big nest and be thankfull!!!!!!

Woah, that's one big nest for a tiny bird. Funny contrast. Sure it's not a "Donald Trump" Wren? ;) Mighty big building!

I dunno how you kayak with the 500 IS... dang... gonna have to join you with my kayak soon! Just always scared of losing my equipment (again).

Hope you get your morning light shot!

Great environment shot, I like how you captured the size the nest relative to the bird, and the added bonus of him in the act of builidng it.

I love it, Chris. I've never seen a nest and to have a shot like this is super. Perfect framing as a bigger bird would lose the habitat. If you don't get another opportunity there is quite a bit you can do with this one.

That must have been quite a mess the GBH gave you!

That is way better than just a nice record shot. It is a great habitat/behavior image.

I think this is excellent. The background is just fine, I think the idea that the only good bg is a nice blurred gradient is wrong, there's no reason why a detailed background showing the bird's habitant can't be good as well.
