I recently posted this on the European chapter, and hope it's OK me posting it here also.

I recently had the great fortune of staying on the Isle of May (Scotland) for a week, photographing puffins among other species.

I noticed this puffin on the lovely lichen covered wall, which was complimented by the colours in the background.

Cheers,
Nick

Nice image, Nick!
The lichen covered rocks add, as does the bill full of fish
and pose. Whites do look a bit hot here as well!

Thanks for the comments folks.

Joseph,

Not sure if you were being serious, asking how you get to the Isle of Sky, but for those who are interested:

From Edinburgh you go north over the Forth Road Bridge and catch a boat from a wee town called Anstruther. They do day trips every day apart from Tuesdays (weather permitting), but landing is only for about 2 hours.

To stay on the island you need to contact Scottish Natural Heritage, and you also need to obtain a licence for photography as the birds are nesting.

Cheers,
Nick

Wow, this is great. I have never seen a Puffin for real, but are planning a trip to Scotland next year. One of the goals is photographing these beauties! What´s the best time and place to go?

Hillebrand,

The best time for puffins in the UK is between June and July. There are many places, here are a few:

Of course here (Isle of May), Bass Rock which is also near Edinburgh which I believe you don't always need a 500mm lens as there are so many in a small space. Bass is also a very good place for gannets. You just need to type in "Puffins Scotland" into a search engine and it comes up with plenty of places around Scotland.

The Farne Isles off the North East coast of England is also supposed to be very good, as is Skomer which is off the South West coast of Wales.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Nick
