The adult on the left is showing greeting behaviour. Head pointed up and neck elongated. When the mate lands it will do this too and strut around the other bird.

I like this because the view of the right-hand bird is a bit different and my goal in photographing the birds of this small colony is to show the behaviour.

Very discouraging though as there is only one chick left from a dozen. Half the adults have left and a couple are starting to renest. Four nests with eggs still and a total of 3 chicks.

10D, 100-400 @ 275 mm, 1/2500 @ f10, ISO 800, handheld from kayak. Full frame.

Very nice image. It is sad that their rate of success is so low. Any idea why?

Interesting behavior and the rocks give a good sense of where they live.

So sad that they all don't make it. Lovely image, though, Eleanor.

The thing I love most about your posts is the story that they tell. I really admire how you work at behavioral and habitat shots. This one is a fine example. Disheartening about the nests....but the image brought a smile to my face.

Nice behaviour shot. Arctic terns are having the same problem here. They keep building their nest too close the the waters edge and end up getting flooded out with the rains.
