Wood Duck Hen Aix sponsa

This was taken last month at a small park in Littleton. Since then all the Wood Ducks have left. I can hardly wait for them to come back. At this lake it is very hard to get a low angle with a shorter lens. I think this hen may have been one of the little ones we photographed earlier this year.

Thanks for looking! Any comments appreciated!

Hi Sheri,

Nice water and exposure. Could you tell what the green thing is she has in her bill?

I know what you are saying about the angle but this doesn't look bad. A friend put me onto a great place to photograph ducks from a marina. Only problem is you are forced to shoot from 8 feet above the water. Even at 1,000mm it isn't a great angle, birds come close enough to shoot @ 400mm but those are top shos!!

I'll trade you 2 Greater Yellowlegs and 3 Dunlin for this duck? Great job!

Sheri,

Love that little dabbling action she has going on. The face looks a little hot while the tail looks a little dark. Geat detail and the water is beautiful.

Nice bird, great water , slightly overexposed on the whites and a tad contrasty, not the best angle for a pose, but still wonderful!! Congrats!! 8)

I think that with all things considered, this is a very nice shot. The light at this park is miserable to predict. Even with the digital its a real crap shoot. The iridescence on the top of her head wouldn't have happened if the exposure was exactly right. The white eye-ring doesn't have enough detail in it anyway to forego the colorful head feathers.
Could you tell what the green thing is she has in her bill?
It was a leaf. We have shots of her with it hanging from her bill. :D

It's a very nice shot with beautiful water. It's probably about 1/3 stop overexposed which is exactly what I would expect for white on dark green -0 that is virtually always a -1 compensation on Canon DSLR's. -2/3 on film would be just about right.

Sheri,

Nice shot. I like the dabbling action. I think you made a good compromise with the exposure, especially since the white area is such a small part of the image.

Sheri

Lovely water and pose. A longer lens for Christmas would solve the elevated angle.

Hey Bill, you ignored all the new lens comments.

Sheri, the eye seems a little soft to me and you did a fine job with the equipment you had. :)
