I just took this image a couple of hours ago. It was one of those times when everything went as planned. I've had this image in my head for a long time but had not been able to pull it off till now. I hiked up a local ridge this morning knowing the colors on the next ridge were looking good and that there were several redtails hanging around. I really didn't care what raptor I got in this image as long as I got one. There was no wind so very few migrants so I figured the birds were more likely to fly along the ridge and not as high as there was no added lift from the winds hitting the cliff face and providing an updraft. I was there 3 hours and was just about to leave when this bird and a juvenile redtail came floating along and stayed low enough so that they were against the fall foliage on the far ridge! I have zillions of shots of redtails agianst the sky but this is now one of my all time favorites!! I love it when things go as planned .
Canon 1D, 300 f2.8, ISO 250, Manual focus as even with only one sensor selected the camera would focus on the far hillside. Jim Zipp
