This is from this past Sunday morning. Although there aren't any fires close to Bolsa Chica, the prevailing winds seem to have blown all of the smoke and ash to the coast and the light was "different".
This male landed, unfortunately on this piece of PVC(which will have to be removed in the future  ) soon after sunrise. The smoke and ash was so heavy in the air that there wasn't much light. This was shot at 1/60 with fill flash.

Fantastic bird and habitat! Just wish the pipe wasn't there.

I swear I have the same bird! It has to be because no other adult male Harrier is this tame. I got mine on one of those thin wooden perches that are there. A agree the PVC is unfortunate, but this is a great shot otherwise. Bigger in the frame than I was able to get. Thank the lord for the 10D~! Be safe over there.

Richard, I think this is the same perch (near the entrance, that I got with my F5 and stacked TC's a few years ago. We do something about the perch. YOur shot is far better than mine. Great luck with that perch. I wonder if the harrier will perch on it if we change from PVC?

Well composed and executed Richard.

Have you thought about placing a log in front of the pipe??

Wow:

These adult males are hard to come by. I see very few of them compared to females and juvies, and those I do see keep their distance. I really like the feel of the light here, despite its origin.
I'd put a snag or old wooden fence post where this pipe is immediately.

Richard, YOu should definately take advantage of this bird if it hangs around! I'd have a snag in it's place ASAP and I'd be amazed if he preferred the pvc. Nice shot of a tough subject to get.

Perch....what perch....all I see is an incredibly detailed and handsome harrier. What I see in the future is an incredibly detailed and handsome harrier on a killer perch. Got one picked out yet? Excellent shot!

Great image of this Harrier. The light is very nice. Looks like a nice snag and a couple hose clamps and you'll be in business. :D

Great shot from a beautiful bird.

Do you think the flash was important under such diffuse light?

Sweet shot.. can you make that PVC into a piece of wood?? Not sure if you could clone a bark pattern and have it work out or not..

Richard

Great harrier pose. Please make sure you put a better perch there before I come out. Thanks, I expect to be there 1/12
