This is my first time here. I took this here in Michigan in Mid-March. This is one of a handful of photos that I have sent to document this bird for our state's rare birds record committee.

This fine gentleman was on a large private pond, where the land owner airated the shoreling of his pond for his two Mute Swans and a handful of Mallards. Fortunately, the open water and his birds attracted wild ducks to his property.

I laid for hours along the shoreline waiting for the ducks to swim up and down the "moat" of open water.

I am new to photography, so any honest critiques apprechiated.

Canon 10D. Canon 400mm 5.6 @ f/8. 1/500 sec. Exp Comp - 1 1/2
ISO: 200. Handheld concealed under portable blind.

A BIG thankyou to Heather for getting me on board!!!!!

Thanks,

Glad to see you posting! :)

A lovely first post, a beautiful bird. The head turn back makes this work for me even with the bird angled away a bit. Your low angle is excellent. The gloomy day makes capturing the darks and whites a bit easier but there may also be a slight color cast which you can test by sampling the whites. (Use the eyedropper tool in Photoshop and read the RGB values - neutral is each RGB value being exactly the same.) Maybe a light pass of a warming filter would remove it, something to try.

Great to see you catching a rare visitor and documenting it. Looking forward to you sharing more!

Great bird Jeff, one I have never seen! I too like the head turned back. The head looks a little soft here so I am wondering if the focus locked on the bird's back or if this is camera shake due to hand holding. Well done and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Jeff Big Welcome !!!! Grand entrance with your first post!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Not an easy duck to photograph (black and white) It looks very good and don't blame you at all for the -1 1/2 comp The whites look good and there is plenty detail on the blacks !!!!!

Congratulations and hoping to see lots more!!!! 8) 8) 8)
