I have never shot birds but after seeing all the terrific posts in this forum I decided to give it a try and I am now hooked. I have been paying attention to the critiques and tips and here is one of my 1st attempts. Any suggestions welcome. I think it might be a bit too sharpened?

Canon 10D 500 f/4 IS w/1.4x Tripod with sidekick. Aperture priority/RAW Full frame.

Steve, you left out one bracket - also you should not even need to insert this code as the integrated upload makes life easier. :) I fixed it for you. :)

Sweet shot!

Thanks Gregg - I tried the integrated upload first but it came up "error" so I did it the old way. I'm using Safari on my Mac.

Excellent first post! Beautiful bird! The only suggestion I have is to tighten the crop. Congrats!

Lovely shot Steven. looks really crisp and vibrant on my monitor (but i'm using a laptop so I'll leave others to comment on any sharpening)

Did you try possibly cropping in a bit tighter since the background is so diffuse, and the bird is quite central. I would be inclined to come in a bit from the left, and also crop from the top and bottom almost to where the flowers are. This way you still get the benefit of the OOF background, the flowers adding colour, and the bird is larger in the frame and slightly less central.

But that's just my opinion, and I make a pigs ear of my shots more often than not   . The main thing is how you feel about the image.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

All the best, Gearoid

Steve,

Older versions of Safari are problematic but the newest version works fine.

Beautiful shot Steven, if your new to bird photography or not. Maybe a tad oversharpened.

Very nice image. I agree with the cropping suggestion.

Keep 'em coming, this one is very well done.

Beautiful! This is great, superb first post! Lovely perch and nice clean background. I might be tempted to put the bird down more towards the lower left corner for compositional considerations - a minor nit on a great catch. :)

Lovely shot, Steven. A slight bit oversharpened. I agree with a mild crop above and below. Great first post.

Hey Steve, welcome, good to see you here!! Hard to get much better than this, beautiful perch and background and colorful bird, wow! A slight crop to take the bird out of center would put this way over the top.
