La Jolla last year. Lots of things, like neck stretch, preening, flying, landing, etc have been posted and I have seen some amazing shots. This shot is amazing, not by being the most excellent position or whatever, but because I have not seen any shots of this posted before.
I think this is a part of the neck stretch , etc set of behaviors. I was watching enough to be able to predict some behaviors. I was ready fo this when the pelican did it. I have a couple of others. It is very wierd to see this from behind also.

Cool Steve. They usually do this right before a headthrow. Stretching that pouch out good to keep it elastic and ready for those spectacular dives we have been seeing posted. I have a few shots of this but some are less flattering than this one. It almost looks like its turning itself inside out! The colors on this bird are unusual, did you crank up the saturation on this one?

Very cool behavior Steve! Love the light on this one. Some will find the downward shooting angle a little too steep but I think it probably shows the behavior better than an eye level shot would.

Well Done!

This is definitely and excellent behavior shot -- nice job of knowing what you wanted to photograph, anticpating, and executing. It looks to me like it could use a little less exposure.

Very cool - I haven't seen them reverse their pouch like this.

Amazing, Steve, but I'm getting dizzy. Excellent technically. I wish the entire shadow were there.

Nice shot Steve....I have one of these with it sticking out even further. This is such a weird (but cool) thing that they do. Good Job!

Very neat behavior, Steve! My best friend lives in La Jolla. I'll have to keep my eyes open for these guys when I visit her next year.
