Took this around the first of Sept. in Monterey, CA. I didn't take one shot with the sun shining during the entire trip. Gave me an excellent opportunity to practice with my flash setup.

These guys would not turn their bodies. Every decent shot I have is over-the-shoulder. I finally got a great chance at a profile but a big feather was sticking out of his back :( .

Chris, this is a stunning image. And, yes, when used correctly as you have done here, flash can open a whole new world of opportunity for you to explore.

Had the subject been a tad smaller in the frame, the image would be better balanced, and further enhanced.

Way to go and thanks for sharing,

Best,

Chas

You handled the DoF very well with the over the shoulder pose. The light is nice and soft but still yielding good detail and modeling. The sloped, lichen covered perch adds nicely to the image, IMO.

Chris, this is a striking image. Love all the colors and the DOF on the bird. The pose is great. It would make a killer vertical too.

I opened this earlier but had to come back. I think this is gorgeous. The overall earthy tones and DOF are wonderful. I *love* the stuff he's standing on.

I like this! The super-sharp feathers on the back are a feature that interests me for their configuration.

An excellent shot of this very cool bird! You did very well to maintain the DOF throughout the bird.

Very nice! You captured the bird perfectly. This one would have been a good candidate for a vertical composition.

Excellent. Actually the sun not being out has helped you a lot. the legs on these are easy to blow out in sunshine. Nicely made.
