Canon 1 Ds Mark II 100-400 IS Lens Multiflash Set up 1/160 f 20 ISO 100

When photographing hummingbirds is important to give a sense of size, the introduction of an anchor point where the viewer finds something familiar, helps to determine the real size of the bird.

In this case the Bromeliad and also the wasp on top made us to appreciate the detail in and otherwise small subject.

Increasing the power of the 2 flashes dedicated to the background (1/4) versus the four dedicated to the bird (1/32) make us overexpose the background so the dark bird will have better chance to pop out on the image.

I hope you are enjoying this series of hummingbird shots and also the tips that I am introducing, thanks for looking, all comments appreciated.

Definately enjoying it Juan. This is one of my favorites of the series and that's saying a lot. I just love the wasp.

Juan,

The bird is absolutely splendid. It is very hard to capture the small gorget on these guys. I've only seen it a few times...never captured it in images yet. I'm in the camp of not liking these sorts of backgrounds however...I'd much prefer something that is closer to the true habitat of the area..some sort of muted dark green. I'm really not sure how to come up with a "fake" background that looks real enough to please me :/

Excellent shot Juan. What a collection you have.

I really think the Bg you made works better with these close focused shots, with a smaller area of the BG showing.

This is awesome Juan although I have to say I'd like it better without the flower.
