Pacific Brown Pelican, Orange County, LA

This bird was found under the bridge that leads to Pacific Coast Highway just north of Bolsa Chica a couple of years ago. Brian Small and I were shooting a female White-Winged Scoter at the time and after shooting about 4 rolls of film on that bird doing basically the same thing (I have learned my lessons since) I decided to walk down toward the bridge when this Pelican caught himself a fish. Since it was under the shade of the bridge I quickly switched to flash as main light, knowing the water was going to go completely black (well, it looked black already). I was faced with the dilemma of having the bird too large in the frame and had no time to remove the converter, so I decided to cut off the tail and leave the room in front of the bird. Many who look at this image don’t even realize that the tail has been severed.

This is one of 20 images that I showed at a gallery exhibit last year and it was well received. It looks good as a large print.

EOS 1V, EF 600/4 IS, 1.4x TC, flash as main light (but set to -2/3 because I did not want it to look over-flashed and wanted some of the dark shadows to remain); 1/250 @ f8 on (you guessed it) Velvia.

Greg,

This one has it all. Graphics, color drama...the list goes on. I love the placement of the wing at the left edge of the frame. That, as I'm sure you know, is what conceals the severed tail.

Excellent!!

Greg,

Great impact on this shot. The throat sack makes it for me.

I really like this image. I think the black background really sets off the detail in the pelican.

Greg, I agree with EJ. The gular pouch is awesome, and dark BGs are my thing. Great image

I've loved this from the first time I saw it on your website. I think the black really enhances the amazing details and lends a wonderfully artistic flair to the image. Makes me wish I was still in Cali!

Greg,

WOW does he pop against the dark BG. IF you had taken another shot to include the tail, you could have stitched the two together. This is superb.

Incredible shot and I agree...if you hadn't told me you clipped the tail, I would have never noticed. Nice going for "under the bridge shooting."

Hey Greg,

In addition to the tail, I think you also clipped the virtual toes!! :P The black BG really makes this bird POP. Love it!

BTW, thanks for the warm welcome. Glad to be here.
