Seems like everyone is going up north to Minnesota to shoot Owls which are present in the thousands and allow you to approach close enough to smell their breath. Everyone except me, that is. The Ironic thing is that I was born, raised, and spent most of my life in Minnesota. I never saw these owls when I lived there. I am so jealous that I had to post one of our shy and lonely Florida owls.

The poor great horned owl gets left out "of" the cold down there. No need to be jealous. This is fabulous.

"Wow!"     would be the only word.

The only "nit" is the owl itself looks too sleepy and not quite ready for photography. :P

Nice one Jim.

I know how you feel about everyone else up north now, but hey! I'll be there soon too

Very nice! I think I would like to see it with the owl moved a little to the right (minor nit). Thanks for sharing.

Nice image & subject Jim. At 500mm I would like to see more DOF on a bird this size, but understand you were hand-holding the camera. Just my 2 cents.

What a beauty! How did you get him out in the open? Up here in CT I never see a GHO out like this. There are three of them in a small grove of evergreens near here, and it often takes me as much as 10 minutes just to locate them, tucked up high, behind a bunch of branches, right up tight to the trunk.
I like how the wind is ruffling his left ear. Adds a bit of action to the shot.

Jim

Be glad your not up here smelling their breath. Nothing like the smell of rotten lemming, vole, with a slight hint of decaying mouse. ;-)

This is a handsome owl, and very well done.

Regards,

Terry

A.J.,

I located their nest and this guy would perch near the nest during the day and nap. I got lucky that he chose a perch in the open. The other times I visited the nest he was tucked up high in a pine tree surrounded by brances and needles with no good shots possible.

Mike,

Why did you think I was at La Jolla? I am in sunny (it's popuring outside) Florida.

No problem. I'll be in the LA area the first week in March and I was thinking about going to some of the birding sites in the San Diego area. Maybe we can get together then. Urbach is freezing his A** off right now in Alberta, CA. I'll send you an email next month and see what's up.
