Been lurking here for about a year but made a New Year's resolution that I would start participating! Plus I bumped into Gigo at Pine Glades Lake yesterday, and promised him that if I got any decent shots that day I would post one.

This is from my first outing with my new 500/4 IS - what an incredible lens. It will take me a bit of practice to come even close to exploiting its full potential.

Anhinga Trail, Everglades National Park, Florida.

Welcome to NSN Richard and congratulations on the new lens. I would crop from the left to just in front of the leg and perhaps a bit from the bottom. Nice shot.

Jerry's crop suggestion is a good one, IMO. Good on you, you get AF with the 2x on the Mark II.

Nice light and capture. I wish for a bit more room in front.

Welcome to posting! The light and detail are beautiful here. I agree with the crop from the left to eliminate the partial leg which feels a little awkward. Hope you keep your resolution and keep posting!

Richard:

Welcome to NSN, I hope you do not mind me tweaking a little your picture, I saw a lot of potential here and just cloned the OOF branch, added a little canvas to the right and cropped. Please keep posting, here we all learn good stuff.

Richard, that was a great New Year's resolution. Thanks for posting this fine headshot. I like what Juan did as the stump was not adding much. Look forward to seeing more.

It's a fine shot and Juan really did a nice job with the repost. You will be amazed at what you can do with that 500mmL. You're off to a good start!!

Thanks for all the feedback, and for the great repost, Juan. I agree with you all about cropping off the leg.

I'm in two minds about cloning out the branch. On the one hand the image is better with more space on the right and it's pretty hard to do that without cloning out the branch. But on the other hand, the branch ties it in to the other images in the sequence and into my memory of the scene - it's the branch that the heron was sitting on, fishing.

Perhaps it would have worked better if the branch had beeen in focus - one thing I noticed when looking at the shots I took on Saturday was that the shallower depth of focus on the new lens had caught me out a few times!

I suppose I could clone in an in-focus branch from another image, but cloning things in seems somehow different from cloning them out, and makes it more of a "photo-montage" than a photograph

I love Juan's repost although I think I'd actually like it better with the branch still there. Great shot Richard and welcome! :D

welcome richard :-)

i don't know how i managed to miss this post - the past few days have been hectic i guess !

it was nice meeting you in the glades ! i hope you have having tons of fun with the new lens :)

nits have been mentioned, but i think with the new lens it's easy to get carried away... the same guidelines apply even if the new magnification can impress one out of them :) you shouldn't have a problem adjusting pretty fast !

i bet the green heron's level of details is amazing ! keep shooting and posting ! and great new year resolutions! :)

hope to catch you later :)
