Eastern Bluebird, Parkton, MD

This summer I spent some time improving my bluebird image library. I have spent over a decade raising and caring for a local pair of bluebirds and their offspring, but only in recent years have I taken the time to capture them on film. This is one of about a half dozen favorites from this year’s images.

Comments and brutal critiques welcomed.

EOS 1D MKII, EF 600/4 IS, 1.4TC, 25mm extension tube, 1/250th @ f8, ISO 400, Kirk window mount with Wimberley head (truck as blind).

Greg,

This is absolutely splendid. Is that a rose? I think the pair might have an alternative opinion on who's been doing the "raising" :) . Let's see some more!

Jeremy, you're right! I have only been providing shelter, but they have surely been doing all the work!

The perch is a weed (not sure of the name but it's a thorny vine that grows all over around here).

That weed looks like a varient of a Rose bush. At least from the shape of the leaves and the torns. It would be interesting to find out what it is.

So when are you holding a workshop so that we can shoot "your pets" too? Very nice image. It's interesting that you needed an extension tube. It doesn't seem that close to me.

I share with you the joy of having these guys to photograph in my backyard!! It would be a huge loss to not have them around. Nice shot.

Wow, this is absolutely georgeous. I thought it was a rose too, but now that you mention it, it does look like that annoying 6 ft. tall bryers of death bush (Not a bad thing in this picture, I just hate those plants :D ). The light on this is what makes it for me. I like the hint of the sunrise/set shining on his wings and tail.

Ok,

My best guess on the perch would be the Multiflora Rose, an "invasive species of concern" in MD. Sure looks pretty in this photo, though!
