Bald Eagle - Homer, Alaska
EOS 1Ds, 500mm, 2x, 1/2000, f/11, ISO 200

While in Homer we had one morning where the sun was burning through a fog and I kept seeing Eagles passing in front of the sun so I set-up to try to capture this. This was a shot not possible with the 10D due to 3 times as long of a shutter lag with it compared to the 1Ds. The trick was waiting for a bird to be the right distance between me and the sun so that it didn't appear too big or too little against the solar disk. The I had to follow the subject and trip the shutter the instant the sun entered the viewfinder so that the timing was right when the shutter curtain actually opened. Out of many attempts, I got one that worked out :)

I know that I and I'm sure many others have tried something like this and I know that I have failed. Take that back. I just noticed on top of everything else you were using a 2x(not something that I would ever try)
Do you have any idea how many images it took to get this? How much of a crop is it?
Whatever the answers to those two questions, this image is exceptional.

1. I think it was around 20 to get 1
2. I think about a 25% linear crop but I'm not home to look at the RAW file right now.

It was foggy so that provided adequate filtration and I was wearing sunglasses

Unique shot and excellent timing EJ, I am always reluctant to look at the sun through the lens even if diffuse.
