Red-crested Cardinal - Kauai, Hawaii
EOS 1D, Mark II, 300mm, 1/160, f/8, ISO 400

About a month ago I posted a Red-crested Cardinal, the whole bird, that you all seemed to like so here is another shot of the exact same bird but from a different location - he followed me around after deciding he really like my Zone Perfect bar which he helped himself to while I was trying to eat it. In this situation I had difficulty keeping him far enough away from the 300 f/4L lens I was using which has a pretty good minimum focus distance to begin with. This is full frame.

 This is spectacular E.J.

The detail is wonderful, especially around the eye. The color, BG, and exposure looks great. Well done.

This is wonderful with superb details showing, EJ!

I'm a little surprise to see this very shallow dof even at f/8 for the EF300/4L. Perhaps you were at the min focusing distance already, right?!

Cool shot EJ. I really liked the one individual that hung around Fazenda Santa Theresa in Brazil last November. The reds look a bit over-saturated here though I think, unless the individuals in Hawaii have a more vibrant red than the ones in Brazil do...Specifically the reds just above and to the right of the eye look a bit overdone to me.

Very nice, EJ. The reds look cooked on top.

What a stunning looking bird! The top of the crest does appear a bit bright but that easily fixed. A lovely image!

Folks, the red here is definitely not overdone - if anything it is less vibrant here than on the bird itself. The red on these birds in breeding plumage is not to be believed and probably out of gamut for Adobe 98 or sRGB. Chris, the bird you saw in Brazil may not have been at peak color as this color fades to brown as the summer wears on.

KK, yes, as I said in the commentary, keeping him outside of the MFD was a challenge so this is right at MFD.

:D :D :D Marvelous portrait, the colours are so vivid. EJ, is this a sample of the much discussed issue where the 1D2 cannot handle reds?
