I will give you guys a break from my Florida pictures. Today, my birthday, I went out to a local wildlife refuge were I keep a photo blind. For three years I have trying to a decent shot of Hooded Merganser and today this guy came close enough for a decent picture. It was a very nice present.

I think the whites are a tad hot here and there is more noise in the blues than I would like for ISO 160. This blind has a limited opening and my flash has to "hang" out the side. So I am never sure what it will give me. Today was also the first day I used the 2X on the 500/4 and I was quite please with the results.

Comments appreciated.

Canon 1Ds, 500/4 IS mm w/ 2.0 TC, F 8, 1/320., ISO 160, balanced Fill flash w/ BB, raw converted w/ C1, curves in PS, 30% crop.

Happy birthday, a truly gift since these hooded mergansters are so skittish. Sincere congratulations.

I think this is absolutely stellar. Hooded Mergansers are so damned skittish. I have nothing remotely close to this good..

I must be far too materialistic - For my Birthday I would like a Mark II   . I think your 3 years have paid off in a very nice capture and the whites look fine on my system as I have detail throughout. My kind of shot, as I am partial to anything with an interesting reflection. Congrats!

Hoodies can be difficult - they tend to be on the skittish side and then they often don't raise their crest when you need them to. It looks like everything came together perfectly for you here.

Happy birthday Christopher!!!
Wonderful capture of a wonderful bird, slightly over sharpened and the whites to the very edge, a small USM halo around his lower mandible and the back of his head, love the low angle and nice reflection as well, very nice, Congrats!!! 8)

A fine shot! Whites are close but look good to me. Good head turn and a fully raised crest. What more could someone want on their birthday! Nicely done.
