It was a very gray day when I saw this young prairie falcon flying above what I think was a young sage grouse. She seemed intent on her prey instead of me so I got fairly close. Unfortunately, the gray sky made her seem a little washed out.

After I posted the image, it looked softer than I thought it would have so I sharpened a bit more. Should have used the preview. Sorry!

Rob,

Closeness is wonderful, but her head gets lost in the far wing. Head turn toward the camera and flash as main light would have helped.

Beautiful bird & nice underwing detail. Did she get the grouse? Sharpening definitely helped! :) Don't know how you cropped it, but I would be tempted to leave a bit more room in front and below.

Suggestions of the position of the head and use of fill flash are good ones. Still....I'd just like to see a Peregrine falcon....you've at least got a nice shot.

Rob,

The sharpened image is better. Also agree with the others about the head and fill flash. But having said that it is a well done image.

The bird and flight position are excellent. It looks as if the image isn't quite as sharp as it could be even after the sharpening as halos are starting to appear. You could probably make this look a lot sharper by adding even more sharpening and then carefully painting out the sharpening halo.

While there are some things that could be improved technically that have been mentioned, I would still be really pleased to have this shot myself. I do prefer the repost, as it appears much sharper than the original.

I like the second image better although there are some sharpening halos. I agree with the comments about the head position but I'd still rather have this image than none at all.
