OK, I said my next post would be something artistic. You decide if I'm right.

This was one of my first efforts to do something outside the normal static portrait. About 3 years ago (?) I had just arrived at the north end of Garst Rd at the Salton Sea, about 20 minutes before sunrise. Even with Provia 400f pushed a stop and the 500/4.5 lens opened all the way I could only get shutter speeds of about 1/15s, which is what this is.

Two gulls fighting over a scrap of dead fish. Definitely one of those "pictures that tells a thousand lies." :)

Unfortunately this was one of my early efforts at scanning and the original slide was lost soon thereafter. It looks OK small but I did not know enough to save a large copy...

Color and composition are excellent. I really like this...very well done. Thanks for sharing.

This almost works for me. I like the idea, but unfortunately the clipping of the top birds wings and the grain/artifacts (?) detract for me.

This one works well for me, Lillian. The effect is indeed artistic. I'd crop a hair off the bottom to make the reflection less important. A magenta or cyan cast seems to be present, but you may prefer the image that way.

Hi Lillian,

This works for me too. I agree with Sandy on the crop. I also think the visible grain somehow adds to the artistic nature of the image. Don't ask me how :D , but it seems to me this type of image is more about the visual impact then the technical aspects.

This works well for me. There does appear to be a sloght magenta cast and a bit of noise. Easily fixed.

This definately works for me. The degree of softness is a perfect opposite to the sharp conflict between the birds.

Very artistic, IMO, and very well done!

Thanks, y'all! FWIW the grain is a combination of pushing Provia 400 (field of blue or green gets grainy) and my messing with the image when I was first learning to scan. I can't see the magenta cast on either my home or office monitors, but I don't doubt you, color casts often don't make an impression on me.

Well, I just love creativity and here it is! It's hard for me to critique, but in reading the other comments I feel Sandy has a good crop suggestion, as the larger white elements grab for attention and the reflection is competing with the actual subjects. The grain adds to the effect for me.
