As I prepare to leave early tomorrow morning for the STL Black Bear workshop in Minnesota, I thought I would post what is currently my only processed image of a black bear, and one of a very few photos that I have of any kind of bear.

Taken at the STL Triple D shoot in California last month, this bear was not easy to photograph. Even in the soft morning light, his very dark, black coat made capturing detail a tricky proposition at best.

Is this "Max"? I got to meet him but not photograph him. I really like how you have composed this image - composition can be challenging when you are not including the entire animal and I like what you've done.

I see the contrast you are talking about from the dark fur. I'm not sure f/6.3 was enough depth of field shooting such a large subject with 500mm.

Hope you have lots of luck with your bear trip!

Brett, this is probably the best shot of this guy from that shoot that I have seen. This guy was just not cooperative at all and the light was just horrible.

Nice exposure and composition with the very difficult light! That looks like one big black bear!

Brett, I think you did very well, especially given the conditions. Very nice.
