I shot this northern shoveler hen yesterday afternoon as she was displaying these colors. I suspect it to be a submissive display meant for the other shovelers with whom she and her drake shares my creek. This pair is low on the pecking order among the four to seven pairs I see regularly. I have seen the drakes do it when having a dispute among themselves, but this is the first hen I have seen do it. All the shovelers have the ability to show the light blue feathers in this prominent display when they wish. Her display makes a really outrageous color addition to a normally not too colorful duck. I will try and get a nice shot of a drake exhibiting this display.

Woody, an interesting observation relating to Shovelers, I suspect that visual Que's are as important conveying a feeling as language is !!!

Very nice detail and a very nice exposure as well, lovely wing colors, nice water colors too, I would increase the saturation by a hair to enhance the contrast just a tad!! Congrats!! 8)

Very nice coloring, both the water and the blue of the wing as well as the brief emerald flash of the speculum. Excellent shot.

Thanks for the comments. I found the drakes and hens also both do this display when they are diving. Yep, another new one on me. I had not seen shovelers diving to feed before. But they were doing it yesterday - both hens and drakes - like they thought they were scaups. They were down 8-10 seconds per dive and did multiple dives. I had never seen shovelers do anything but surface feeding. And I got the drake flashing his colors yesterday while he was diving, showing even more outrageous colors than the hens. My only problem is that it was so near dark I am not sure I should post the photos. I think they are interesting but not really good enough to post. I will try again ealy next week after I return from the PMA convention in Las Vegas where I am now.
