I recently went to a few sites trying to buy some Eclipse cleaning fluid (ie. methanol) for my dSLR sensor. However, I discovered that many places will not ship this because of restrictions of going by air. Understandable since it is highly flammable. I ultimately made a drive to a local camera shop to get some.

This got me to thinking - what if you want to take this stuff on a trip? Has anyone encountered any problems with bringing this stuff on a plane? Carryon or check it?

I've been carrying it with me on trips for a while. The bottle, now less than 1/2 full, I feel is no more of a threat than a cigarette lighter or a bottle of perfume. All of these items are flammable and in large enough quantities should not be shipped by air.

I have always put the eclipse solution in my checked luggage--no problems so far.

When I got to my destination on my last trip I found a notice in my bag from TSA that the eclipse fluid had been removed as it was banned from checked baggage.

I think it technically is and they were acting with appropriate authority in doing so.

Just think of all that flammable booze that they carry in the passenger cabins... (Ah, but they can make money on that!)

I travel every so often with a colleague who carries a bottle of heavy crude oil with him. (He talks about it in the course we put on.) It's a sealed bottle, but he doesn't trust baggage handlers, so he always carries it in his carry-on bag. Never had a problem, so far!

I believe Dick is correct. Seems to be on the banned list. See the following link:

Actually, it seems to be on the banned list for both checked and carry-on. Guess you don't need it!
