Walking along the beach one early morning in search of snowy owls we spotted this guy flying fast along the dune toward us. As fast as I could I got my camera off my shoulder and jammed the tripod into the sand and got the bird in my viewfinder as best I could and fired off 9 frames on my 1V which lasted 1 second. When asked if I got that I said I honestly had no idea. When the slides came back I was thrilled to find that in 2 of the middle frames (which lasted all of .2 seconds the bird had turned it's head toward us! I had no idea that had happened. The dark background is storm clouds on the far horizon while the sun was rising over my shoulder.

EOS 1V, 600, 1.4 or 2X (can't remember which) Provia pushed one stop.

Man oh man, what a shot. The head turn really makes this shot and the background ain't bad either.

Wonderful image and yet another reason to be organized and ready to take advantage of what opportunities may arise. The light is rich and the eyes really draw the viewer into the image.

Agee with all the praise! Only possible composition improvement would be the owl out of the center of the frame, via cropping.

Excellent flight shot, well captured detail, very nice light & BG.

This is not a criticism; why is the centre circle brighter than the edges and the left side slightly brighter than the right?

Jim, the thing I find frustrating about your photos, is that I can never find a nit to critque. This is a once in a lifetime shot. I'm in Awe.

I can only figure that it is possible the different color and density of the clouds plus maybe a bit of vignetting with the long lens and converter. There is no unusual post processing done on the image so it's only a guess.

Jim,

Great shot. The head turn toward you is perfect. I like the light on the bird against the dark background.

An awesome shot!!! The eyes are excellent as is the background. I do see some slight banding in the background. A higher bit scan and using CS in 16 bit mote might resolve that.
